Whether it is in the books we read or on the news we watch, society creates its own idea of a hero. Although we are exposed to “heroism” everyday, identifying a true hero becomes a challenge.
For many the definition of a hero is personal, but overall the title is used too loosely.
Should Adam Vinatieri, place-kicker for the New England Patriots, be called a hero for winning three Super Bowls with his right leg? Should Madonna be considered a heroine for reinventing herself for a new generation of success? Though these people are idols, they are not heroes.
In the wake of the violent hurricanes, earthquakes and other catastrophes, I have realized that anyone can be recognized for doing something exceptional. However, true heroism lies on the foundation of sacrifice.
For instance, my mother is my hero. She goes out of her way to take care of my brother and me. Our mother gives up her own time to commute 40 minutes to school from our house everyday so we are able to have to opportunity to attend great schools such as Broughton.
As Student Body President, I consider myself blessed that I have the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s life. I have learned humility and graciousness in times of accomplishment because anytime you do something for others with motives of personal gain, joy will only be temporary.
When one sacrifices false pride for the greater good of others in their actions, heroism will be evident not in recognition, but in the result of their works.
Sincerely,
Josh Broadway
