As the seasons change, so do the sports. Whereas most action took place on the field, the doors to Holliday Gym have been unlocked and the basketball team has taken the court.

Tryouts for men’s basketball started on October 31 and had an excellent turn out.

“There were a lot to choose from,” Jeff Ferrell, head coach, said.

With new team captains, seniors Kyle Felmet, L.J. Dunn, and junior Brock Young, who were chosen by their team members, the Caps are expected to do exceedingly well. Last year the Caps were 21-7 overall and 7-3 in the Cap-6 Conference. They are expected to do even better this upcoming season.

Ferrell’s expectations are “high and hopeful” for the team this year. This year’s schedule is competitive, but with added depth and a good combination of guard and post play, Ferrell is confident that they will do well.

Millbrook and Leesville are this year’s biggest opponents. Other conference rivals such as Sanderson and Enloe, which was added to the new Cap-7 Conference, are expected to be tough, but not as competitive. In practice, the team is working on offensive and defensive sets, and how to play as a team. They are focusing on style and the role of each player.

Broughton’s scoring threat comes from the front and backcourt. The Caps’ leading scorers are two guard Young and forward Dunn. So far this season the Young and Dunn tandem has combined to average over half of the Caps offense, with Young averaging 23 points and Dunn averaging over 16 points per game.

“I want this to be a team that is fun to watch,” Ferrell said.

Along with regular season games, the team will also be competing in the Glaxo Smith Klein Christmas Tournament on Dec. 27-29.

The Purple and Gold Scrimmage was held on Wednesday Nov. 19. The Caps went up against Cary on Nov. 19 and came out with a win. The Caps won 69-62 with the help of the games’ top scorers, Brock Young who scored 34 points and L.J. Dunn with 16 points. The Caps tipped-off with Page on Nov. 26, winning 74-66 and lead by Young who had 28 pts.
