The heat is on: Seniors Mike Norton and Brandon Harkey take a snooze on one the school's register with Junior Jarod Kent sitting close by.

I am so sick of wearing my jacket every day to all of my classes. It seems like everyday I hear at least one student say, “I am so cold”. Soon that is all about to change.

Lakewood High School is adding a brand new heating system. Hearst Mechanical is putting new, upgraded boilers into place.

The boilers will transfer heat, through boiling the water,to individual heating vents in the class rooms.

The old heating system would transfer heat to large heaters in every classroom, but some heaters would work better than others, and a few would even blow up because they could not handle the pressure. The new heaters will be more reliable and durable, so no students will be in danger of the heaters.

The heaters distribute heat equally throughout the school. Classrooms and hallways will be the same temperature, rather than walking into a classroom that is 20 degrees warmer or colder than the hallways.

Kendall Smith, from district maintenance, controls the heat. The updated heating is computerized. Smith puts a password into a web site and can control the heat at the school from the comfort of his own home.

Unfortunately, the seniors will not be enjoying the heating system, or the rest of the new school, since construction is not expected to be completely finished until winter break of 2009.

Until then, bundle up in your winter jacket or snowsuit and try to stay warm.
