Just a man and his guitar. He used no props, no back-up musicians, not even a microphone. Seventeen Newton High School French students had the opportunity to attend French singer Marc Vincent’s low key concert. The event was held at Wichita State University on Feb. 5 and was open to any students currently enrolled in French.

"There were not many people at the concert. It had that intimate nightclub atmosphere," French teacher Nora Kelting said.

Throughout the one-and-a-half hour concert, Vincent sang humorous and romantic songs, all of which he had written himself. His topics ranged from a stolen anti-theft system, to fables, to the ways ducks sound in different languages.

"Oh my gosh, he was clever. It was just hysterical," Kelting said.

But even those who did not understand the entirely French lyrics took something away from the concert.

"The concert inspired me to learn more French because I really wanted to know exactly what he was saying," French II student Brandon Hanchett said.

Kelting hopes that all of the participating students also benefited from the concert.

"Anytime I can immerse my students so that the only language they are hearing is French will help them," Kelting said.

Hanchett agreed that events such as these helps students apply their knowledge.

"Every time I heard a word that I had learned in French class it felt like what we had learned in class could be applied to real life," Hanchett said.
