Kaila Frederick is fourteen years old and plays basketball for the South Side Lady Hawks.
Kaila’s position on the court is post.
Her job is to stand at the block under the basketball goal so the point guard is able to pass her the ball to make a lay up.
“We practice everyday,” said Frederick.
She said they practice for two hours and thirty minutes.
At the beginning of practice they get in a good ten minute stretch.
“When coach is not pleased with us we have to run laps,” said Frederick.
Kaila said sometimes she does not like all of the running part of basketball.
Kaila’s strategy for not getting distracted on the court is to just ignore people.
Kaila’s basketball number is 35.
She said that this is her favorite number because she feels lucky.
Kaila said that she does not want a career in basketball.
“My goal in life is to become a successful pediatric nurse ,” said Kaila Frederick.
“Although Kaila is a freshman, she shows a lot of potential. She may not be the first or best at everything, but she never quits,” said Karen Merriweather.
Merriweather is a senior on the girl’s basketball team.
Kaila’s dad is DaMonn Fuller, the boy’s basketball coach for South Side.
He has been coaching basketball for seven years.
He has a lot of experience in basketball because he played basketball as a child.
With Coach Fuller being a basketball coach, Kaila said Coach Fuller doesn’t make her practice a lot at home.
Kaila said he just makes her watch basketball tapes.
