Members of the victorious boys track team show off their hardware.
For the past five years the Chelsea high track team has undergone an immense transformation from only having two wins in 2005 to being undefeated for the past two years. The track team formula for success can be considered simple: “Hard work and effort,” said Jonathan Lopez.
During the course of the past three seasons the track team has won twenty straight league dual meet games, an amount that is worthy of recognition. “It’s a great feeling to know that I was part of something this special,” said Arnaldo Chavez. “It’s something that’s going to last in our memories for a  long time.”
Going undefeated and winning doesn’t come easy – most of the winning is done in practice first. Every practice since the big winning streak started has been taken seriously. Every sprint, every throw, every jump resulting in every sweat has been attempted to reach the highest of potentials. I know, because I used to run the 400 in about 62 seconds, but then with practice I’m now running it in about 56 seconds.
We are not only strong physically but also mentally. Our hard practices always make us think of the potential that we have, inspiring us to never give up. If we are behind in a race, we think of all the hard work that we put in prior to the race, which pushes us to give that extra boost needed to defeat an opponent. Our teams’ confidence is at its highest point day in and day out and we never go into a meet without having a positive winning mindset.
Even when top performers that have been on the team for a number of years leave us, there are always new athletes who are more than willing to fill their spots and take the challenge of keeping up the good work and success of the team. “Even though we lost good people for the past couple years,” said senior Jorge Gallego, “we still manage to win the league and continue the winning streak. It’s up to next year’s team to unite and recapture the title again.”
