Everyone knows that Elkton is a small school. Too small to have a functioning band. So, who better to fill that spot than the Reedsport pep band?
Mrs. Murphy, longtime director of Reedsport's music department, has a son, Jackson who plays on the football team. After speaking with Elkton's athletic director, Rob Parker, it was decided that Reedsport would travel to Elkton and play for their homecoming game.
Students left right after lunch on Friday. A small white bus transported the entire band to the high school.
Since Elkton has no lights on their football field, the game was played at 2:30.
Prior to the game, the band learned and practiced Elkton's school song, the Notre Dame Victory March.
"It was fun that we got to go and see how other schools celebrate their homecoming. I liked that we could be there to support them," said Caitlyn Reilley, a saxophone player.
Throughout the game, the band played through their songs about three time. Attendees at the game applauded after songs ended.
"It was really interesting to go there, because only about five kids were there from the school. It makes me appreciate how our football games are," said Cormac Dailey, who plays the flute.
Everyone took break third quarter. Some kids went down to the river and explored.
"It was the longest game I've ever watched," said James Hixenbaugh.
The game ended in a victory for Elkton, 12-6.
