Dances are usually
an occurrence most high school students look forward too, right? For
the students of Exeter-West Greenwich High School that does not
appear to be the case. Sure the annual dances such as homecoming and
prom are a hit, but everything in between seems to be lacking.
A number of dances
have been canceled due to lack of ticket sales and interest in
general. This year even winter ball, an annual and usually popular
dance was canceled. Although ticket prices for winter ball were
somewhat expensive, the dance was lacking general student interest.
Over the course of this year the two biggest dances have been
homecoming and the back to school dance. Students crowd the gym and
have a good time dancing with their friends.
Attempts to have
more class-run dances that will spark the same large attendance have
failed. Most recently was the glow in the dark dance. The juniors
came up with a really cool theme, but apparently that is not enough.
The dance did get a better turn out than some other mid-year class
run dances, but still not a large number of students.
It comes down to a
few possible reasons why people do not show up to these dances. One
is class rivalry. Students from one class boycott a dance sponsored
by another class, which can severely cut into the number dance
attendees. Another main reason is lack of overall interest. Some
students just choose not to go because they don’t feel like it.
It is understandable that not everyone enjoys dancing, but if it
supports your school, what could it hurt?
