Although CHS offers coursework of all levels, academic challenge has always been popular with students. This year, with the addition of four new Advanced Placement classes, students will have even more opportunities to challenge themselves in subjects that interest them – and also opportunities to receive college credit.

According to guidance counselor Jill Wienecke, AP Economics (Macro/Micro), AP Environmental Science, AP Art History, and AP Computer Science will all be offered at CHS this year.

Wienecke is confident that the new classes will be welcome additions to the available coursework.

“I think the new classes are great for the school, the AP Program, and the students,” said Wienecke. “What’s especially great is the wide range of subjects, so students can find a class for them, whether they’re into art, science or technology.”

Over 102 students have signed up for the new classes. However, there is some variability in class size. AP Economics is the most popular, with 46 students currently enrolled in classes this semester. AP Art History, on the other hand, has a tiny class of six

Regardless of size, students for the most part seem to be enjoying their classes. Senior Sarah Holland is a student in Ms. Cotton’s first period AP Environmental Science class, and she considers it a great way to start the day.

"AP Environmental Science is fun. Ms. Cotton is a great teacher, and we’re learning in a fun way,” said Holland.

She went on to mention an innovate exercise using goldfish crackers to simulate the common problem of overfishing.

Thus continues CHS’ long-standing tradition of excellence. Hopefully the new classes will become as beloved as such favorites as AP United States History and AP Psychology. Only time will tell.
