On April 22, people took a stand for women's rights at Capitol Day, a day designed for helping teenage girls to express their perspective on women's health.
Capitol Day is run by a non–profit international organization where
women take action to protect their rights of reproductive system.
The 2009 Capitol Day Theme was "Yes We Plan! Taking Action for a Healthy California."
The day kicked off with a morning rally and education fair. The fair
included booths on topics such as cancer prevention, parent–child
communication, and just quizzes about methods of birth control, safe
sex, healthy relationships, and preventing abusive relationships.
Over 550
Planned Parenthood employees and teenage mothers from areas throughout
California traveled to Sacramento to make a difference by discussing
the importance of reproductive health care. In a meeting with
legislators, they were able to share their opinions on health care
issues in order to advocate for women's health care rights.
During the
meetings, groups of girls went at a different times to talk to at least
one legislator. It was a memorable moment for when men and women stood
up to share his or her thoughts and opinions. For example, many teenage
girls discussed how Planned Parenthood was beneficial to them because
they rely on the free services the clinic offer.
At the end of the day, teenage mothers and Planned Parenthood employees felt relieved and proud of themselves for speaking out for what they believed in.
“It was amazing, informative, and motivating! I am definitely returning next year,” stated a 17 year old mother of two.
