Dear Mr. Begley

As the year winds down for us, we reflect on all the great things we have been able to accomplish as journalism students. We then think of why we were able to make great strides in our work: As Americans, we have the right, by way of the First Amendment, for the freedom of speech and of the press, to do so.

Then, we think of why we are so privileged to have that right to live out our freedoms.

Thousands of men and women like you sacrifice their time to protect this country, its people and the freedoms that cornerstone this nation’s entire foundation of beliefs.

Before you leave for Iraq, we wanted to let you know that we are thankful for your dedication, not only for your work in the military, but for your work as our assistant principal.

Our thoughts and thanks also go out to your friends and family. We know and understand that it is not just the person who must sacrifice, but the people he or she must leave behind.

We are proud of you, not only for your strength, but for your commitment to us and this nation.

As we tie our yellow ribbons once again, we remember what makes this country the land of the free and the home of the brave: It’s our soldiers like you.
