On March 17, the faint smell of sausages and eggs was circling around the cafeteria. The scent was the result of the Lake Central student of the month breakfast that was hosted during SRT.

Assistant principal Mr. Tim Powers said that the administration was able to make the student of the month breakfast possible by the donations received from donors and sponsors.

“We do the breakfast every two months for economic purposes. Students report, they eat, sometimes we even have a guest speaker,” Principal Mrs. Sandie Platt said.

The student of the month breakfast is meant to recognize students who were chosen by teachers for their positive accomplishments in the classroom.

“[The purpose of the breakfast] is to reward kids for doing all the little things like never being tardy and doing their homework. They’re a part of the positive,” Mr. Powers said.

Mrs. Platt said that the administration tries to take up the least amount of students’ time, and they also try to make the breakfast as simple as possible. The breakfast may be simple, but students of the month appreciate it.

Junior Allie Bell was named a student of the month for February by Mr. Ochs.

“I liked it. I thought it was put together pretty nicely. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves,” Bell said.

The students named as students of the month vary in personality, and there is no one description.

“I don’t think there is one typical student of the month. You get some boisterous students, some shy. They come from all aspects of the school, but they’re all great,” Mrs. Platt said.

“[A student of the month] is just somebody who does what they need to do without being disrespectful towards teachers,” Bell said.

Mr. Powers said that to become a student of the month a few things are required.

“Be a positive force in class, and make a conscious decision to be active in your education,” Mr. Powers said.

Each month, about 65 students are chosen by teachers to be named students of the month. However, only one student is chosen collectively by Lake Central principals. Mrs. Platt said that the student of the month chosen by principals receives special privileges such as a school parking space and free Lake Central items like key chains.

“I think [students] want to know they’re doing a good job, and that’s what [the] student of the month [award] does,” Mrs. Platt said.
