Mays' senior class of 2012 is preparing for life ahead. Students are now filling out college and scholarships applications.

It has been an insane rush going back and forth to Nikki Smith, the Math and Science Academy counselor, to get transcripts, recommendation letters and fee waivers.  Also, students are taking the SAT or ACT to meet the standards of the college they're applying to.

“I applied to several of colleges that I’m interested in,'' said senior Jasmine Adams. ``After receiving letters back stating what else the colleges needed, I had to go back to my counselor to get them, even though she kept putting me on hold.''

Walking down the halls of Mays, there are students flying in and out of the counselor’s office trying to get their college packages complete and sent.

It has only been three months since school started and some seniors have already been accepted to the few colleges they've applied to.

“I have been accepted and signed to Tennessee Tech. I will be playing basketball and hopefully I'll go pro,” says senior Mariah Dean.

For seniors preparing for college, trying to stay focused on school work seems to be a big headache. Some students are not able to get most college applications done because of all the time spent on college essays and school work.

“I am not really able to focus on my college applications because I sometimes have to write many essays for a couple of my classes. Some of these essays are due back to back. The only time I do have time to complete my applications is during my sixth period, which is my college success class,” said Bree’ Sharp.

Students were trying to keep their grades up to par so they could participate in the senior induction program, Investiture, which was held on Nov. 18. The program is for seniors who have met their responsibilities and are on track to graduating on time.

“It’s all about time management. If you can’t make time then you won’t accomplish anything. I had a certain hour where I would do homework and a certain hour to do applications. I have completed fours applications and now just waiting for a response,” says senior Yasheena Zachery.

Senior year could be really stressful and also motivated at the same time. Hearing the urge of other people wanting to do things in life could be motivating. Hearing about the college a student wants to attend could also inspire others to apply to as well.
