The students in the class of 2010 have received a combined total of $7,899,083 in scholarships, and of this total $3,869,910 was accepted and $4,024,173 was declined.
Each year Senior Recognition Night is held in order to honor and reward the hard work of senior students during a ceremony in their honor.
Over eighty students were present and were recognized on Senior Recognition Night, May 6 at First Baptist Church.
During the ceremony students are recognized individually for the scholarships and awards they received during their senior year.
“The Senior Scholarship Night as a whole allows students and parents to see where students are going and what scholarships they have received,” Katherine Cortest, counselor, said.
Invitations were sent out to family members inviting them to attend the special recognition ceremony in honor of their senior student.
“We have people from the community, local colleges, faculty and dignitaries [attend], and people get to see the opportunities in the community and see [students] take advantage of these opportunities,” Cortest said.
Each student who attends is recognized by the university foundation, institution or organization who gives them the scholarship and their college plans are stated during the ceremony.
Senior Recognition Night is run by Cortest, along with the help of Dana Hemphill, who writes the script, and Lynne Chesley, Betsy Ballard, Shannon Pawley and Erin McCain who serve as committee members for Senior Scholarship Night.
After the ceremony a reception was held at First Baptist Church in which senior students received certificates from scholarships they had received and attendees were delighted by a student composed string-quartet.
“This year Mr. Gibson and Mu Alpha Theta made cookies for the reception,” Cortest said.
