At-a-glance

a group floats down the river - tubing
Advertising

Every week before the "Red and White" staff starts on articles we spend a class period brainstorming topics, well this week, being our last week, of course the only topics on our minds were our summer plans: summer jobs, sports, and summer activities. One of the favorite summer activities is blowing up some cheap tubes and floating down one of the Iowa rivers for a half day. It's true, floating the river is one of the favorite summer pastimes of many high school students, but if you don’t plan well for your river trip, it can be a very bad experience. We have compiled a list of the top rivers to float, and the top supplies needed for a good float.

Top Rivers

  1. East Nishnabotna
  2. Coon River
  3. “The Ponderosa”
  4. West Nishnabotna

Supplies needed.

  1. Beverages - gallon jugs of water work awesome, and float about the same speed as you
  2. Air pumps - blowing up your tubes by hand, no good
  3. Sunscreen - it could take longer than you expected and you could get crispy
  4. Decent shoes - Crocs, I know they're embarrassing, but they are the perfect shoe for the river
  5. Towels - you’ll be wet and dirty, which doesn’t mix well with a car
