On Tuesday May 13th the members of the Migrant Planning and Parent Advisory Committee honored and surprised Director of Curriculum and Instruction Derek Cruz at the Washington Union Board of Trustees meeting for his hard work and dedication to helping them.
“I was absolutely blindsided, I don’t like to be in the spotlight” Cruz said.

“He’s engaged with the parents and students concerns questions or comments,” said sophomore Salvador Fonseca in his speech to the Washington Union trustees. “The Migrant parents feel comfortable to know that he is there to support them if the need arises.”
Cruz has worked to provide Migrant students with many classes that can help them achieve academic success. Among the classes English Learners Development, Work Study Program, Career Awareness, CAHSEE Prep Classes, and Migrant Tutorial.
Cruz also supports the Folkloric club which he helped to bring 10 new dresses for the girls through funding for the after school program. Even though not being able to speak Spanish fluently, he makes an effort to communicate with parents and to inform them on school related topics.

“[This award] shows that the kids and the families really support Washington Union,” Cruz said. “I was really excited because the school board was there and students were there, and they were able to see the support that that community has for Washington Union.”
