The incessant vibrating of cell phones during class has become something that virtually no one pays notice to anymore. Everyone expects that someone’s cell phone is bound to go off during class time and it is simply ignored by some teachers and most students. However, the students don’t ignore it for long; the majority of students to receive a text message during a class will find a time to text back, despite the rules present in our school.

School’s not the only time when people are text messaging; they do it when they are in the middle of conversations, when they are working, and even while they are driving. Is text messaging becoming controlling of and a distraction to more important tasks, such as a person’s education and even a person’s safety?

Although, I must admit, texting is a very convenient mode of communication, it is often used too much. It is nice to have a quick way to say, “Hey, give me a call,” “I’m running late,” or something similar that gets the point across quickly, when we are not in a location where we can or have the time to make a phone call. Being able to communicate with more than one person at once, which is possible through texting, serves not only as a practicality, but as a time-saver as well. But, it’s gotten to a point where it has become overused.

People text constantly and about things that are supposed to have more meaning and be more personable than words sent through phones. Since when has prom become something that guys ask girls to, not in person, not even through a phone call, instead through words written on a phone? Apparently it has now, because yes, people are beginning to use texting as a way of asking dates to prom.

A survey was performed on 45 of Torrington High School’s students and adults combined to research this piece.
