After a long holiday break, the Blazers hosted the Indians from Cheyenne Central for a team dual on January 6, at Willi Gymnasium. Torrington couldn’t get things rolling as Central built an early lead that lasted throughout the night as Torrington fell 21-57. Only four of the varsity wrestlers collected wins in their respective weight classes.
“I thought the dual was somewhat disappointing, and I believe our wrestlers can perform better,” said Head Coach Doyle Meyer.
Junior Mitch Schlager thought that the dual was, “not so hot. There were some good matches, but we could have wrestled better.”
Meyer felt that long break did have an effect on the team’s performance. “We got out of shape and lost our wrestling form.”
Some things the team felt they need to improve on were “to be more intense” and “to stay in good position”.
Before the varsity competed, there were some junior varsity matches against the Indians. Five of the eight matches were won by Torrington as the junior varsity won 29-12.
“I was extremely proud of how our younger wrestlers have stepped up considering the lack of experience we have, and I am excited to see how the team performs at the Scottsbluff Invitational,” concluded Meyer.
