The Blazers are still marching towards regionals after a couple of conference games. Torrington lost on February 6 at Rawlins and then came home the next day and lost to Douglas. They then went to Wheatland and beat the then 3A East first place team. After playing the three games the Blazers held an overall record of 10-7 on the season and 7-4 in the conference giving them fourth place in the 3A East Conference.
Torrington traveled to Wheatland on February 13 and won the contest 50-48. Coach Darin Anderson said, “It was great to go to Wheatland and come out with a win.” He also said that the next two games are huge for regional seeding and that if the team scores, they will be fine.
Junior Kyle Nighswonger said that the Wheatland game was “a fun game to play in.” He also said that there were a lot of successful free throw attempts in the game. He then said that the next two games against Glenrock and Buffalo are big conference games and that the team will be playing for seeding in regionals starting on March 5 and ending March 7.
The weekend of the sixth and seventh started with the Blazers traveling to Rawlins for a game that ended 55-46 in favor of Rawlins even though the Blazers lead after the first half of the game.
The Blazers second game of the weekend was against Douglas and the Bearcats won the game 55-41 over the Trailblazers. Sophomore EJ Zimmerman said that the team played two bad games against Rawlins and Douglas and that none of their shots were falling. Zimmerman believed that the team would rebound after the two losses, and they did beating Wheatland on the thirteenth.
Anderson said, “The team couldn’t score against Rawlins and Douglas. We struggled.” He also said that the team shot around twenty-five percent in both of the games against Rawlins and Douglas.
Torrington now has three remaining games within the conference and one against Scottsbluff on February 24. The Torrington boys’ basketball program just lost two games before their victory over Wheatland on February 13 ending a streak in which the team won six of their previous seven games.
