PBIS. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. This may seem as a good thing to some, but to many students some parts of it are just a nuisance and a case of "too little too late."
The newest development with the new PBIS program comes in the form of the dress code check before and after the announcements. This is a disrespectful interruption of the pledges and the minute of silence, because the teachers are checking students during both of them. Perhaps this should be done during first period; it wouldn’t cause as much disruption.
PBIS also brings about the "SMART" activities. There are few students who take this seriously, but many find it cheesy. It’s a good idea, but there has to be some other way to convey the lessons of "SMART" to the students who don’t care.
A lot of kids don’t take it seriously and they do what they’re supposed to do. They dress properly (which isn’t that hard), do what they’re told and respect others. The kids who took the assemblies about dress code seriously were few and far between.
There are also some students who don’t take it seriously and don’t do what they’re supposed to do. They dress and behave poorly. PBIS is doing the right thing by trying to straighten these students out.
The only way to make PBIS fully work would be to make it more relevant to teenagers; perhaps the theatre department could put on a comedy show featuring the lessons of PBIS.
Also, add more incentives besides "Cougar bucks" (abiding by the law of course), and to get the point across to the older students in a way that they wouldn’t make fun of.
