On April 2, eight of Edwardsville High School's most esteemed males took part in an intense competition full of dancing, strutting and winning the love of the crowd. They each wanted the same thing: to achieve the title of Mr. Irresistible.
The contestants included senior Jordan Hayes of Spanish Honor Society, junior Casey Fay of Film Syndicate, senior Michael Lynch of the tennis team, senior David Little of the drama club, junior Chad Wagner of Spanish Club, junior James McCommas of the math team, senior Nino Smith of WYSE and senior Kevin Pekkarinen of student council.
“I did Mr. Irresistible because I was asked by my club to be in it to represent them and I thought it'd be really funny,” said Smith. “I had a great time it was a lot of fun. I'm glad I came.”
The show began with an opening group dance which each contestant participated in. “It was intense,” said senior Jordan Hayes. “I never knew dancing was that hard! I give props to all the dancers.”
Smith agreed that, “My least favorite part was the beginning getting ready to dance because I've never really danced before in my entire life and I was really nervous.” However, Smith said the dance was still a fun experience for each of them. “We spent a long time on it it was just fun learning and pretending we could dance,” he said.
Following the group dance was a talent display and interview question for each contestant. Some of the talent acts included a Johnny Cash impersonation by David Little, a juggling display by James McCommas, stand up comedy by Chad Wagner, a creative rap performed by Nino Smith and Kevin Pekkarinen and a Flamenco dance by Jordan Hayes.
“Whenever I found out I had to do it, we were going on a field trip the next day to learn to flamenco dance for Spanish Honor Society. Emily Dunn and I choreographed a flamenco dance and wore some crazy costumes,” said Hayes. “It was actually really fun.”
Smith believes his interview question, in which he stole a line from the movie Dumb and Dumber could have been better. “It didn't work out well because there were a lot of female judges and when I first said it a lot of them didn't pick up that I was copying from the movie, but a lot of guys in the audience did.”
At the end of the night, third place was awarded to Chad Wagner, second place to James McCommas, and the first place title of Mr. Irresistible was given to Nino Smith.
“I won because I got lucky,” said Smith. “I won two free prom tickets for me and my date, and I won a free tuxedo rental.” Smith also won the chance to decide which charity the donated money collected at the door would go to. “I gave it to the Crow family because they recently had one of their daughters die and I thought they could use the money to help bury the child and compensate the loss.”
Smith and Hayes consider the show to be a success. “A lot of our friends were there so it helped with the support and it was a lot of fun,” Smith said.
“It was really hard but it was fun to do,” said Hayes. “It was also kind of embarrassing, but it was fun.”
