Graduation (noun); the ceremony of conferring degrees or diplomas, as at a college or school.
For Paul Laurence Dunbar high school the school year is finally coming to a close and that means graduation is just around the corner. This year graduation will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 4 p.m. at Rupp Arena. There will be around 470 seniors graduating.
Senior class President Andrew Sevigny will speak, along with Vice President Mya Price, Secretary Leslie Davis, Treasurer Daniel Rouse, and Katie Huang, who is the Poet Laureate and Student Council President.
Friends and family will head downtown to watch students close the high school chapter of their lives. “I am really excited to graduate and go to college!” said senior Josie Salyers.
Others are having a harder time realizing that these are the last few days in Dunbar’s halls. “I am looking forward to graduation but it is weird to think that I won’t be here anymore,” said senior Jessica Harman. “I am ready to leave; it’s just a bittersweet moment.”
At the ceremony this year the band will be playing “Pomp and Circumstance” and the choir will be singing “Live Your Dream.” There will also be a slideshow of pictures from the memories that the seniors have shared together. “I am really going to miss all of my friends that are still going to be at Dunbar next year, but I am excited to move on and do bigger things,” said senior Will Potter.
The seniors have spent a lot of time in this school and made many memories. They all have mixed emotions, but most are excited to leave and start fresh, “ I am really excited, nervous, and anxious to leave high school and go on to college,” said senior Michael Kendall. “I’m going to miss all of my friends and the memories we have made at this school.”
