At 10 am on January 18, downtown Lexington’s streets were filled with people gathering at Heritage Hall in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day.

The actual march started on West Main Street as the marches marched for about an hour. Signs were carried in remembrance towards Martin Luther King Jr. Even some directed to President Barack Obama. One said, “President, please remember this day.” Also, many signs included pictures of President Obama next to a picture of Martin Luther King Jr.

The weather was cold, but sunny as the marches had much energy. They sang songs like “This Little Light of Mine,” during the parade.

Seniors Kayla Bryan and Jonathan Koshy were among the Dunbar students in the parade “It was important to me to really remember what this day is about and raise awareness about how there is still injustice all over the world,” said Bryan.

Jonathan Koshy agreed with Bryan and thought similarly of her. “It was really nice to see people in Lexington of all ages and ethnicities to come together and remember someone who changed our country.” Even though he was sick, Koshy said “It was worth it to get up and attend the march.”

Dr. Julianne Malveaux, who is known as the 15th president of the Bennett College for Women, attended the parade. She has appeared in USA Today for discussing racial issues in high education and discussed these issues with the crowd.

The turnout of the parade was about a few hundred people. Businesses such as daycares, religious groups, and youth clubs all joined together for the march, and all around downtown people seemed to be stopped as the marches walked past their parade.

Overall this event had a great turn out and many people came to pay their respect to Martin Luther King Jr.
