Members of the basketball team wait while another sports team finishes up practice in the overcrowded gym. -

If practice makes perfect, Charter’s sports teams are in a heap of trouble.
With only so much time for teams to practice, the practice times, and having to share the gym with Cab Calloway, there is not enough time for all the teams to practice in Charter’s gyms.
The freshmen basketball team has to go to A.I. Middle School to practice instead of staying at Charter, but they do not really see this as much of a problem.
“I’m just glad we have somewhere to go...At least we can practice more than once or twice a week,” freshmen basketball coach Montwaine Lake said.
There aren’t any problems with space or people when the team goes to A.I. for practice, according to Lake.
That may be the feeling for some people this year, but others had mixed feelings about having to go to A.I.
“When I was on the freshmen basketball team last year, I thought it was inconvenient to have to travel to A.I. every day for practice. Though it is nice to have all six basketball nets functioning regularly, unlike at Charter’s gym,” sophomore Rick Walsh said.
Even if it’s not that bad having to practice at another school, it doesn’t mean practicing at Charter is unwanted either.
“...I wish we could stay at Charter and practice,” Lake said.
But with the girls’ basketball teams and the boys’ basketball teams practicing from 3 o’clock until at least 7, there’s no time in Charter’s A gym.
There is also the C gym to practice in, but, besides being too small for comfort, the wresting team uses it as well as other groups.
So even if the team tried to practice at Charter, there’s very little chance that things would flow smoothly, and the C gym isn’t exactly normal gym size either.
The freshmen basketball team isn’t the only group feeling the problems with gym time either.
Other groups, like Color Guard, don’t practice anywhere else but Charter, so some practices can’t begin until 7 o’clock or later.
This means practices don’t finish until 9 o’clock or later, leaving students little time to enjoy their lives at home, especially if they can’t get a ride to their practice—they would have to stay after, meaning they would be at Charter from early morning to late at night.
This could lead to two things—either a new, bigger gym to accommodate for Charter’s teams, or better practice times for students who currently have to stay at Charter for almost the entire day—or maybe just a huge student dissatisfaction.
