It was a tough loss for the Colusa Redskins on their first football game of the season. Numbers definitely played a huge role in the Redskins loss only suiting up 16 people compared to the Live Oak Lions 35. The game started out even as an even match with the Lions getting on the score board first passing the ball into the end zone, but Colusa answered back with Quarter Back Jeremy Hernandez rushing the ball for a touchdown. Then the Lions got back on top once again passing the ball again into the end zone, but Live Oak didn’t hold the lead for long with a well ran counter play by the Redskins which ended up in a touchdown scored by Geoffrey McPherson.  It was a hard hitting offensive game with the score at the half tied at 14.

But the second half was a different story for Colusa struggling to get up the field. The Redskins 16 couldn’t keep up, and even though the team left everything out on the field they couldn’t compete against Live Oaks numbers who had fresh people coming in the game every few plays. Colusa did keep the score board from getting out of hand with the defense only letting two touchdowns get by them with the final score of the game 28-14 Live Oak. Nobody enjoys starting the season off with a loss but Colusa hopes to make their corrections and bounce back from this and try to get their first win of the season at home against Peirce.

There was a lot of speculation going on before Colusa’s first home game against Arbuckle.  Colusa had suffered their first loss a week before to Live Oak losing 14-28 and Arbuckle dominated Esparto 20-6. Colusa came into the game not knowing what to expect, but after the first few plays it was all answered. Peirce got the ball to start it off but  Colusa’s defense wrecked the Bears offense forcing them to punt. On the punt Dylan Macpherson was able to get through the line unblocked blocking the punt before the  kicker could get it out, and Benji Gill was able to scoop the ball up before any Peirce Bears could get there and Gill ran it in for the game’s first score. After that Colusa controlled the tempo of the game with QB Jeremy Hernandez rushing in the Redskins first offensive touchdown sending the score into half time 14-0 Colusa.

Not much changed in the second half with Colusa’s defense led by Hayden Myers owning the entire game frustrating the Bears offense not letting them move the ball upfeild.  Colusa‘s offense was slow to get back on the board but Carlos Gutierrez finally manage to find the end zone for his first touchdown this season and the Redskins second offensive touchdown of the season. Colusa played a great game with their defense being a big part with their first win in Redskins (1-1) 21-0 lost over Peirce (1-1).

Week three, and the Redskins were looking to continue their domination of Colusa County. Colusa made the short drive to Maxwell high school where they played their first time ever on the Maxwell’s field. It was extremely humid and one could not watch or play in the game without being agitated by the millions of bugs that were flying around the field. But when it came time to play the game did not start off on a slow pace. Maxwell’s Gerrardo Parra took the ball on their third play of their first offensive drive for a 60 yard touchdown to give the Panthers and extremely early lead with them missing the extra point. But the Colusa offense was very unsettled about Maxwell getting on the board so on the first play for the Redskins Carlos Gutierrez broke free of the Panthers defense and ran for a 55 yard touchdown.

After this, Colusa didn’t have much of a challenge shutting down Maxwells passing game which really was their only weapon on offense having a struggling running gaming other than their only touchdown. The highlight of entire game would have been the 51 yard field goal Luis Benitez in the second quarter, but because of a head injury Luis had to leave the game before it was over. But it took more than that to stop the Redskins from having a great win. With the final score 26-6 Colusa (2-1) with a nice long bye week coming up to give the team a nice break.
