After a long, hot day out at Inderkum High School on May 13, Woodland High School's track and field team emerged with an undefeated record in all three divisions (varsity boys, varsity girls, junior varsity boys) and with the knowledge that they were back-to-back TCC champions. Not only that, the team has twenty-two athletes moving on to the section meet at Bella Vista High School.
The Wolves won both the boys and girls varsity titles by scoring 178 and 159 points respectively. They also won the JV boys title with 148 points.
There were several individual winners that day. Both Justin Gibbons and Billy Landis won events for the second consecutive year. Gibbons won the boys varsity long jump, Landis the boys varsity 400. Ryan Banwarth came in first in the boys varsity 1600. Nick Chik won the JV boys 1600, 800 and pole vault. For girls, Melissa Mainini won the girls varsity 100 hurdles and Melissa Rosin won the girls varsity long jump. Rosin, Mainini, Landis and Banwarth were also part of Woodland's two winning 4x400 meter relay teams.
Coach Chuck Bruns was ecstatic for him team after their undefeated season.
"It was a great day to be a wolf," said Bruns. "This is our best season in a lot of years as a team. We're pretty proud. We won everything we were entered in."
