The Soothing Sounds of Corinne Bailey Rae The Soothing Sounds of Corinne Bailey Rae

Corinne Bailey Rae, a hit musician, is at the top of the charts in London has now been listed as the "Artist to Watch" on VH1 for weeks. Her voice has been compared to the soulfulness of Norah Jones to the breathy voice of Macy Gray and even to a little of Billie Holiday.

However, Corinne Baily Rae's music can hardly be constrained to one category. Her latest debut album "Corinne Bailey Rae" is a unique blend of acoustic rock, soul, pop and R&B that grows on you as you listen to each song.

Corinne Bailey Rae's song, "Put your Records On ", reached the top of the charts in the UK in a few weeks, and all the hype is well deserved. Put Your Records is a up beat, lighthearted song played to a funky background beat. The beginning lyrics "Three little birds, sat on my window/And they told me I don't need to worry. /Summer came like cinnamon/So sweet," makes you slow down what your doing and to just chill out and listen to her whisper through out song "just relax, just

relax…."

The song "Till it Happens to You," hints a foreboding ending, but Corinne Bailey Rae's voice deceptively seductive voice convinces you otherwise. The whole song is sung gently, slow and sultry. Once you get over the simple melody and her sultry voice, you can hear the

she's actually singing about losing love instead of finding it. Her lyrics over all aren't anything other that the "I love you, please love me" lines we've all heard before, but it's the way she sings the lyrics not the lyrics themselves that makes Corinne Bailey Rae worth listening to.

The first song on the album, "Like A Star," truly accentuates Corinne Bailey Rae's airy, light voice that floats on the air and flows into your ears. In "Like A Star," you can feel the sincerity in her voice and it hits at the heartstrings. Corinne Bailey Rae's heartfelt singing and flirty yet innocent tone is a large part of what makes Corinne Bailey Rae and her songs so enjoyable. It also sets the tone and central theme of the rest of the album, love.

The majority of songs Corinne Bailey Rae's CD are worth listening to, but a few such as "Butterfly" and "Enchantment" don't have the same uniqueness as "Put Your Records On." Her voice still drips with sensuality, but the songs melt into a tiresome, monotonous repetition of "Like A Star." It's the same idea of falling in love and the same overdone lyrics that force her voice to carry the

weight of the song, which she attempts to do, but you can only hear the same general song sung over and over again so many times.

Still, Corinne Bailey Rae is a talented singer who, with the exception of her lyrics, is successful today because of her beautiful and unique voice.
