Clean Those Hands!
Students caught washing hands ... this is not what the data says at Campbell High School. - Tai Faro

Students in Ms. Grant and Ms. Brereton’s 10th grade literature class completed an action research project on the number of people who used the restrooms without washing their hands. Their findings and results were astounding and troubling.

One class observed that over the course of one week, students said they caught 132 people leaving the restrooms without washing their hands while the other class found 145 people who did the same. All together, this totaled nearly 300 peers and staff members who were discreetly caught not using proper sanitation techniques needed before going on with their day.

“In our research, 87 boys and 45 girls did not wash their hands,” said Kevin Le, a student from second block.

Another student, Diesy Martinez, said, “One hundred and ten males didn’t wash their hands, and thirty-three females didn’t wash their hands.”

Is this a trend, perhaps, that we must acknowledge? How does this bode with a potential flu epidemic?

Some of the restroom stalls were even lacking toilet paper and soap dispensers were empty. Toilets were not being flushed and several hands dryers were broken.

These hazards raise speculation about students and teachers' health and sanitary practices. The cafeteria’s restrooms were amongst the ones that were absent of soap.

“When we eat, we do not want to consume the germs we have on our hands. Think about it. We are at lunch to eat food and help ourselves, not to contaminate our bodies,” said Danielle Fritz.

Some of the suggestions that the students came up with were automatic flush systems, running hot water, open drains, exhaust fans, and for the restrooms to be monitored on a weekly basis to check on any soap and toilet paper shortages.

And some words of advice ... Clean those hands!

This is a very important topic that needs to be addressed and attacked head on. If this is not handled just think on how easily it will be for germs, viruses, and bacterial strands to spread and harm people. By you not washing your hands you are inadvertently harming someone else and you do not even know it.

I think that this article is great for people to read so they know how many people do not wash their hands after using the restroom. It shows that not washings your hands can affect the health of others around you at school. This is a very important issue that many students and staff should take note on. I also like the new restroom ideas.

I'm glad that we all know the truth now. I also think a lot of students use hand sanitizer rather than washing their hands because well, the bathrooms are just not clean. Now I know I should use hand sanitizer a few more times in a day because every one around me is just not as clean as they should be. How did you guys find out that people did not wash their hands?

This was a great article that really opened my eyes. I didn't know that so many people didn't wash they're hands and are spreading germs every single day. Only problem with this article is that there is a small spelling error. Great informative article overall!

I like the article because I believe that everyone should know about their peers and staff in the school that are not washing there hand. Also we should know the amount of germs that are going around.

Students should always wash their hands cause they can get sick and be out for some days or months. The teachers should wash their hands. We should keep our school clean. We should paint all the bathrooms in the school and put in auto-flushing toilets, fix the sinks in all of the bathrooms in the school so that we can clean up our school.

As a substitute teacher, this is not the only school that lacks running hot water, and proper sanitation procedures.

What bothers me most is the neglect of much needed materials for bathroom use, but this is not limited to just this school. As a substitute teacher for the Cobb County School District, I can't count how many schools I have been in where the dryers don't work, and the hot water doesn't run.

I'm glad that our school newspaper took the time to acknowledge the fact that Campbell High School restrooms are utterly repulsive. Yes, maybe the information in this article is "nasty" but it needed to be said to protect our student body from serious health issues. -Desiree Scott

I really liked it. I like this article because it tells everyone we should keep our hands nice and clean and all of our school to be clean and safe from germs. We need to stay clean so we won't get the flu going on but it was good. =)

Wakaflocka! This issue is kind of nasty because you have to really think about the subject.I dap ALOT of people up everyday so just wonder how many people's hands I'm touching that haven't washed their hands.

The article gave us a real insider view on how the school restrooms are really like

This was a very good article. Students/teachers should really wash their hands to prevent the spreading of germs. This seems to be a major issue that we should pay more attention to.

I think it was a good idea to make a article about washing your hands because people need to know about the germs they spread around in the school and do something about it because it's really nasty to have to stay in a school like this. Help make it clean for our students.

This type of behavior is not good for our student body. I agree with the solutions that have been acknowleged. This school should be more tidy and should have cleaner restrooms. If we all help with this problem then i'm sure we can fix it. -Matthew Cotton

This article was great it shows the amount of germs traveling around our school. Not washing your hands can cause lots of health problems. It can effect people around you and also the school.
