The purpose of this program is to motivate students to pass all of their classes and graduate on time with their classmates. Harlem has had a continued problem with student dropouts. After talking to a few students, I’ve realized one of the main reasons is the feeling that it is hopeless to retake a failed classes, plus the classes required for that term. With “Failure is not an Option”, students in grades nine through eleven will be required to attend tutoring sessions if they are receiving a failing grade in either Math or English classes. Each individual student will be referred by his or her teacher to attend the tutoring sessions. The student will then have to attend a session two times a week from 2:20-3:20 until his or her grade is no longer a failing one. Some may wonder if this will even work. Who’s to say the students will even attend the sessions? Senior David Green said, “I think required tutoring is a good idea because I know friends that don’t get good grades and forcing them to go to tutoring will really help them out.” The tutoring is mandatory, and anyone who decides not to attend will face several consequences including no after-school activities, no sports/games, and getting a parking pass revoked! Teachers and staff are taking this program very seriously because of the simple fact that they want to see students succeed. If any student still refuses to attend tutoring, it will be up to the administration to deal with the student as they see fit. To the teachers who are staying after to help out these struggling students, you are very much appreciated. This is a program that should be taken advantage of by each and every student. The big question that still remains on everybody’s mind is, “Will the program succeed?”
