Brain cells are working hard at Cameron High School. The Academic team, CHS's elite academic nuts, as they refer to themselves, are preparing themselves for competition to go and prove their knowledge. This year will be full of triumphs, though it might be a little bit harder with no seniors, but the teams' confidence is not easily shaken. Their sponsors are looking forward to a good year, and so are the team members.

Junior Corbin Bogle said, "I think we win a lot, and if we lose any I know we will be able to bounce back and not let a disappointment discourage us."

It is not easy preparing for the competitions. Questions asked are randomly asked from a variety of subjects. There is so much to study and so little time, so how do the students pull it all off?

"We have practices for an hour and fifteen minutes everyday after school," said Coach Ms. Fagan, "We practice a variety of things, all the circular subjects, plus fine arts. A lot of it is just memorization."

Corbin said, "Studying a lot of current events helps a lot. So picking up newspapers and magazines are perfect." For the newer members it is a little bit harder than being in middle school. The questions are more difficult and harder to memorize.

Freshman Chris Pratt said, "When I was on the academic team in Utah we just had one subject. We didn't have a bunch of random subjects." Though it is a little more complicated, Chris said, "I think this year will be great, a challenge, but having challenges just makes the triumph that much better." There are many places the team will go this year some of which include, Lexington, Smithville, Savannah, North Kansas City, St. Joe Christian,  and Lee Summit.

"Traditionally Savannah has been the hardest competition for us, but this is a new year, new team, and Savannah has a new team as well. So I have no idea what this year holds," said Ms. Fagan. There is so much learning and skills received from being on the academic team. The weaknesses grow into strengths.

Junior Amanda Lakey said, "The hardest questions for me are the history questions. I am not very good at American History, but I am hoping that through this I will be able to make it one of my stronger abilities." Sometimes the questions can stump the members and then other times the answers will be so easy they barely have to try.

Chris said, "Once I was asked, 'What president's nickname was JFK?' I didn't even have to think about. I like those questions though." The Junior Varsity team competed November 15 at Lexington. The team did great! The J.V. team won two and lost two. The only way to go for them is up.

The Academic Team is on a role. They are memorizing and studying like crazy, and though they have a lot on their plate, they have a lot to look forward to. They are the brightest from CHS and always come through with great answers. This year looks great for CHS's Academic Team.
