Freshman students in Ms. Anthuis' language class. - Jessica Parra

A new crop of freshmen crowd the halls of Cameron High School, and moving to a different building to be atthe bottom of the chain can be intimidating. "...its hard to adapt toall the class changes and new people I have to meet," said FreshmanSydnie Holzfaster.

You can always tell which students are the
freshmen;they're the ones with the terrified looks on their faces scrambling tofind their classes and trying to figure out their lockers.

"I was excited to come to high school when I was in 8th grade," said Freshman Keith Young. Although being a freshman has its downsides, most Freshmen don't like being at the bottom of the chain when they were just at the top.

"It's just a little intimidating being thrown in with all the upper classmen," explained Sydnie. There is the occasional 'seniority' rule towards freshmen, but most have not experienced it.

"I'm pretty much friends with the upperclassmen. We joke around occasionally," said Freshman Eric Wallace. Eric is actually in the majority at CHS because most of the freshmen get along just fine with the upperclassmen.

There are many changes from middle school to high school. For example, middle school doesn't have block scheduling. "I like the [block] scheduling here," said Sydnie, "but I don't like how long the classes are." Other students agree with Sydnie about the length of the classes.

Students are also offered the option of al
a carte and a salad bar at CHS, neither of which is not an option at the middle school. The freshmen enjoy this new option for lunch. Freshmenare also introduced to combination lockers at the high school. Mosthave trouble learning and remembering their combination and openingtheir lockers.

While most Freshmen simply moved a hundred yards from CMS, some have even bigger adjustments to make. Freshman Keyona Turner-Lee moved here from Kansas City this year. "It's just different [here] because there aren't a lot of people here," said Keyona. She said it wasn't that hard adapting to a smaller class size, and she likes the more one-on-one attention with the teachers.

Perhaps WhitneyWalser best summed up the greatest common belief amongst the new kidson the block. "I just like having more freedom," Whitney explained. A lot of the freshmenagree with her. They feel as if the high school offers them moreopportunities. They are offered al acarte and a salad bar at lunch, combination lockers, block scheduling, and many more activities theycan choose to be in.

Although it can be intimidating at first for the
freshmen, with all the new policies and new people, they will get along just fine and have a great year.
