Between class dues, gas money and all the other fees that come with high school, students might find themselves a little stretched for cash. This is why most students apply for a part time job.

In the beginning is the job hunt, and the job hunt begins with applications. Most students will apply to multiple places when looking for a job. “I put in 13 different applications before getting a job at McDonalds,” said Junior Amanda Wiedmaier, who now works as a cashier at McDonalds.

For the students that already have a job, the main conflict is scheduling. “I work from about 4-11pm every day, except Saturday and Sunday,” said Senior Kayla Ott. Kayla is also employed at McDonalds and works as fryer. Kayla went on to explain that her only scheduling conflict was her job preventing her from attending church on Wednesday nights.

While some struggle with keeping things as close to their previous schedule as possible, others have trouble balancing work and school work. “ When I work during the week it was really hard for me to concentrate on doing my homework when I had to go to work almost every day,” said Senior Rebekah Adamek. Rebekah works the drive-thru window at Dairy Queen.

In addition to fitting a part time job in with school, many students are also involved in various sports and school activities. Rebekah is involved in both drama and sings in the school choir. For me other activities come first, and if I have to I will ask off,” she explained.  Rebekah also went on to say her employers were lenient and allowed her to switch shifts with her co-workers if needed.

Before getting a regular job most teens mowed lawns or did odd jobs for their parents. “Before getting a job at McDonalds I used to be a babysitter,“ said Amanda. Most of the students working at a fast food restaurant makes roughly $7.25 an hour ( minimum wage). Some students are saving up for cars or trips.

CHS students do various jobs ranging from babysitting to working at a fast food restaurant, and while things may become difficult at times most will pull through for the sweet reward of their paychecks.
