Next May, the Cameron High School Band and Pom Squad are going to Florida for one week. They will be leaving May 20, 2014, and when they get to Walt Disney World, they are going to play in a Disney parade.

“They are going to Disney [World] to have a good time and play in the parade,” said Senior Taylor Harcourt. They are leaving for Florida and Disney World early in the morning on the day after graduation. The trip will cost $500 per student, and students must bring their own money for food and souvenirs. They are taking charter buses to Florida which Senior Pashantz Howell is not looking forward to because she says, “It is a really long drive and everyone is going to get upset and it will be awful.” Parents are allowed to go if they volunteer to be a chaperone.

The students are allowed to go if they are enrolled in band, have been in band since middle school, are eligible according to school policy, are passing a band class, and must pay their way either by fundraisers, a payment plan, or a combination of the two.

The band has gone to Disney World in Florida four years and this is Band Director Shane Jones’s second year. The first time they went to Florida was in 2000. The band will be staying at Disney’s All Star Resort. Mr. Jones commented, “They have the resort all geared for all the groups coming.” All the All Star buildings have different themes such as: jazz, rock n’ roll, and much more.

At set times, Disney has a parade which goes through the Magic Kingdom. The band will be marching in the parade, which, on an average day, performs to a crowd of 10,000. Currently there are 116 band students and 35 adult chaperones going on the action packed trip to the Happiest Place on Earth.
