The Stress that comes with Senior Year

Senior year has been referred to as “The Year of Tears,” because of the happy and sad times that come with being called the leaders of the school. It is a very emotional year. For some it'll be the last year for them to spend with the ones who they have grown up with throughout their school life. Many people also see it as the last year of their childhood. They begin to make their own way after graduation. Saying the final goodbyes to the ones they have seen every year for the past thirteen years can be very upsetting, and the fact that one might never see some of them ever again just makes it that much worse.

Senior year is also one of the most stressful years of a person’s school career. There is so much to worry about, and so much to get done. If a senior student hasn't already gotten a head start throughout the years past, it can get very hectic. It’s the last year to prepare for whatever the student's plans are after school and get the ball rolling. Senior Hannah Salmons said,“The thing that stresses me out most is all of the homework, and getting things ready for college. The fact is, next year I'm not going back to high school, and I'm going to be in the real world without my parents. I'll be out on my own, and that is kind of scary." Seniors must navigate many challenging obstacles on their way to adulthood. They must apply for scholarships, pass all their classes, decide which college to attend, achieve a good ACT score in addition to many others. If they don’t take of some of these necessities early, things will pile up creating more stress.

Another thing that adds to senior stress is the opportunity to take college classes while still in high school. CHS offers college classes, which count for dual credit if applied for. These classes transfer as a college credit to some colleges. Those classes can get very difficult, and at times, have lots of homework. Senior Derek Fiquet said, "My college classes are very stressful. It can be very difficult at times trying to keep up with all of the homework.”

Finally trying to narrow down all of the career choices that are available to students is hard. There are so many career options out there. Senior Wesley Calloway said, “I do not know what I'm going to do when I graduate. There are a lot of options out there. I just haven’t figured out which one to do yet.”

Senior year can get to be very hectic. If seniors have procrastinated or have slacked off in the prior years, it most likely will be difficult to catch up with everything. The stress of trying to plan their entire life in one year is a lot. It’s basically the first step into the real world as an adult.
