The fourth installment of the popular Harry Potter films premieres the 18th of this month; an event which students eagerly anticipate.
The Goblet of Fire, the latest of the movies based on J.K. Rowling’s best selling series is directed by the English director Mike Newell, of Four Weddings and a Funeral fame, and reprises the roles of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint as Rowling’s famous trio. The movie tells the story of Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During his time at school, Harry is selected to compete in the upcoming Triwizard Tournament, a magical competition between Hogwarts and two other schools of magic; Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.
The movie’s impending premier causes exitement for many students. Students such as Christian Short (Fr.) said, “I love Harry Potter.” Natalia Gomez (So.) said, “They’re really good books, the last few movies have been good.” Alex Chen (So.) is exited for another reason, finding Radcliffe’s, the actor playing Harry Potter, new hairstyle comical. “Harry has a big mop on his head, its funny,” Chen said.
Although The Goblet of Fire has received support from York High students, some are worried about the upcoming movie’s staying true towards Rowling’s book. “When you see the movie’s trailers, its exciting, but not what you’d expect in comparison to the imagery that Rowling gives in the novel,” said Sophomore Amanda Berrios.
The film is based on the long fourth book of the Harry Potter series, also known as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Due to a decision by the production studio, Warner Brothers, Newell and The Goblet of Fire writers had to piece all of the events in the lengthy book into one film running only two and a half hours.
The Goblet of Fire also stars newcomers Clemence Poesy, Robert Pattinson, and Stanislav Ianevski as Harry’s fellow competitors in the Triwizard Tournament, Fleur Delacour, Cedric Diggory, and Viktor Krum. Old favorites, like Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore, Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall, and Alan Rickman as Severus Snape, return to the cast.
The movie is set to become the most expensive movie in history, its production budget at $308 million. It is predicted to surpass the production price in the box office, as it is one of this season’s most popular movies.
Director David Yates, a popular English made-for-TV movie director, is currently looking into the fifth Harry Potter movie. This movie is predicted to come out in June or November of 2007.
