With seven-tenths of a second remaining before halftime, the Falcons needed one defensive play to stop Jamestown High’s scoring drive. Instead of a pivotal stop, Sean Blow (Jr.) attempted to intercept the ball, which resulted in a touchdown for the Eagles. The touchdown tied the game. The play gave the Jamestown squad a momentum that never relented. Unable to make a major play on offense, York suffered a homecoming loss 17-7. They remained scoreless in the second half.

“The team didn’t seem to have the same heart as we did last year,” said Joe Tierney, a former Falcon football player and York High alumni, home form Virginia Tech for the game. “We used to get excited about even the coin toss,” he said.

Besides spirit, the Falcon team has lost its infamous double threat: running back Charles Brown- Rich and fullback Antoine Holmes. Both graduated in 2004. Without the speed of Brown- Rich and the indomitable strength of Holmes, the offense makes use of Blow and Mike Leccadito (Sr.) to run the ball.

Though the Flacons rely primarily on their running game, tight end Kenny Massing (Jr.) usually provides a dependable target for quarterback Stephen Opp (Sr.). However, the Falcons played without Manning during the homecoming defeat. Instead, they targeted widouts Randall Montgomery (Sr.) and Joey Buzby (Sr.).

The defeat of Poquoson in a previous game attests to the team’s capability when Manning, Leccadito, and Opp play to their full potential. “ The SATs and the half day of practice prior to the Saturday game drained the team of energy,” said Penn Stephenson (Jr.).

Brett Moore (Jr.), the placekicker, said, “ If we stay focused and continue to work hard, there is a good chance we’ll make the playoffs and finish 7-3.” Though falling short of lasts year’s district title, the Falcons continue to develop new plays to exploit available talent.
