The Redbirds took flight against the Edwardsville Tigers in a highly-anticipated matchup of two rivals on January 19. Every game played between these two creates a college-like atmosphere in the crowds, with both schools boasting a large student section and the support of the communities.
“We are excited about playing them this year because the game is always packed and the crowd gets us going,” said Sophomore Tyler McLemore.
The Redbirds attacked early with an 8-0 lead as they pressured the Tigers into three straight turnovers. The Tigers clawed back to cut the lead to 18-10, but the Redbirds kept the lead with a fast-paced attack as the Tigers could not answer with their offense. Tony Bradley, senior, led the Redbirds with 15 points and Shane Mathews, junior, chipped in 11 points with three 3-pointers.
“We actually played as a team and we got it going,” Mathews said. The Redbirds won the game 60-43 in their first win against Edwardsville in three years.
