Do you like to read? How about discussing books? If you do, then maybe the Teen Book Club at the Abington Public Library is just for you! The Teen Book Club was originally formed in 2005 by a general consensus amongst high school students who had outgrown the younger cliffhanger reading group.
By interviewing Ms. Emily Miranda and Mrs. Deborah Grimmett, the acting directors of the group, I was able to find out that this club is basically an open discussion between the group members, with occasional questions guided by the librarian who decides to help lead that session’s discussion.
I also learned that the books read by this group can be decided upon by either the acting directors or the members, who can also suggest some titles to be read.
So far, the Teen Book Club has read Young Adult Fiction such as Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak, Ransom by Lois Duncan, Gordon Korman’s Son of the Mob, as well as several others. They also read The Blood Confession, and Ms. Miranda was able to bring Alisa M. Libby, the author, to the library to discuss her book and sign the members’ copies.
The Teen Book Club aims to meet ten months out of the year, although meetings usually do not happen in December or July. The meetings take place at the Abington Public Library on the last Thursday of every month. The only requirements to join are to be an Abington teenager in the grades seven through twelve.
Mrs. Grimmett recommends only that you should “like to read…and like to discuss what you have read.”
To join, simply go to the library and ask a librarian! It’s great fun and the perfect place to show your love of reading.
