A sample question of the bell ringer assignments. -
Ferguson has established a new rule for students enrolled in
science courses: students must complete bell ringers at the start of class.
The bell ringers consist of students answering one multiple
choice question related to science. The questions are meant to help students prepare for the science
FCAT.
However, students that have already taken the FCAT are also
expected to complete the bell ringers.
Students are having mixed feelings about these practice
questions.
Senior Leslie Somohano said, “I think that the bell ringers
are good for those that haven’t taken the science FCAT, but that it’s a waste
of time for seniors. And if
anything, seniors in a class should not be forced to complete them.”
Teachers are also reacting differently to the mandatory task.
Chemistry teacher Marilyn Morales said, “I think it’s a good
way for being prepared to review for the science FCAT, especially with the new
incentive the school is offering.”
She also added that if students score a three or four on the
FCAT science, their fourth quarter grade will be overridden to an ‘A’. If students receive a five, their final
grade for the class will be overridden to an ‘A’.
Regardless, all students are expected to do these
assignments at the start of class, even if they offer no actual gain or even
credit for many students.
