When it was announced about two years ago, the fashion world was ecstatic. British-based clothing retailer, Topshop, was finally coming to New York City; it would be the company’s first store in the United States. Though it was expected to open in the fall of ‘08, several delays occurred, prompting rumors that the project might be canceled. Fortunately, the rumors were false and Topshop opened on April 2, 2009. The SoHo location will be at Broadway and Broome has both Topshop and Topman, the stores male counterpart.

So what’s all the hype about? Topshop has been the mecca of stylish clothing in the UK with many celebrity fans including Nicole Richie, Siena Miller, Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Lindsey Lohan, and Kate Bosworth. Perhaps the most enticing part: unlike many other fashionable stores, the prices are moderate compared to high-end designers. The store contains several lines within it, each with a different theme. One of the most well-known lines is Kate Moss ‘hearts’ Topshop, featuring the supermodel’s acclaimed fashion designs. A British artist, named Stella Vine, also created a line for Topshop featuring her colorful artwork.

Though the store is well-known and liked, people are wondering if it will as big of a hit as it is in the UK. Though the prices are moderate, they are still higher than those of stores like H&M, a longtime competitor. However, many fans and industry-folk alike believe that the store will be equally popular, stating that the clothing designs are far better than most, with a unique British touch. Also, people believe that the recession won’t stop people from buying but do just the opposite. Many believe that the stylish, affordable clothing will compel fans to buy.

The New York flagship store will be the second largest Topshop and will feature the same apparel as other stores. The interior of the store features a whimsical design, a DJ booth, hair and beauty salon, tailoring center, and style advisors. Plus, for the opening week, these and more services will be given complimentary. Previous to the opening, a Topshop truck went around giving out gift cards up to $500 all around the city. To further celebrate the opening, several lavish parties and events have taken place as well.

The opening of Topshop has caused quite a commotion in the city; we’re hoping it’ll live up to its name. With its effortlessly cool designs, chic store setting, and stylish atmosphere, it’ll be hard for it not too.
