So much can happen in just few hours. On the evening of February 9th, 2009, Chris Brown and Rihanna attended producer Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party. The couple seemed to be happy together. But when they were in Brown’s rented Lamborghini, the night took a turn for the worst. Chris Brown received a text message from another woman that Rihanna didn’t ignore. She threw his car keys out of the window, and that was when Chris Brown lost his temper, and his past actions haunt him to today.
A neighbor heard Rihanna’s screams, and immediately dialed 911. The LAPD found a beaten Rihanna alone at the scene. There were extremely visible contusions on both sides of the singer's face, a black eye, a split lip, a bloody nose and bite marks on one of her arms as well as on several fingers. Just by reading the condition of the Barbados-born singer one can comprehend how brutal Brown’s beating was. She was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to be treated. Meanwhile, Brown, hours later, turned himself in to the LAPD and was released on $50,000 bail.
Yet, this incident may not be the first of the couple’s relationship. In early December 2008, a friend of Rihanna’s told US Weekly that bruises were easily seen on Rihanna’s neck at the time. "I asked if everything was OK with her and Chris,” the friend said, "She told me, 'We broke up again.'"
When Chris Brown was a child, he was, like every other boy, dealing with the problems of everyday life. Life wasn’t pleasant for the young man and what he experienced then motivated what he inflicted on his girlfriend in the future. Brown was surrounded by domestic violence; his step-father often abused his mother. However, in 2006, Chris talked to MTV about abuse. He said that the violence he witnessed as a kid was "an influence in me about how to treat a woman." He added, "I used to always feel the hate for anybody that disrespected a lady." An ironic statement if there ever was one.
After all the two singers have been through they may possibly be back together. In late February, they spent time together at rapper P. Diddy’s mansion in Miami Beach’s Star Island. Following the couples rendezvous in Miami they have not been seen together.
Rihanna seems happy and like she is recovering from her ordeal. "She is in good spirits. And she sounds great," says her father Ronald Fenty. On the other hand, Chris Brown is keeping a low profile in his home state of Virginia. He is to attend court for assaulting Rihanna, on two felony counts. A source says he’s, "Seeking counseling, reconnecting with family and focusing on writing and producing," and also playing basketball. On March 31, Chris visited University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. He made a surprise visit when he played basketball with several students in the gym.
The week of March 31 was coincidental for Brown. The same week he visited the university, it was White Ribbon Week. The event’s main purpose for men to educate other men about domestic violence. As the singer played on the court, ribbons and buttons were passed out to students watching him play.
They say that time can heal all wounds and that is hopefully what is happening in the lives of Chris Brown and Rihanna. Spending time apart will clear their heads, and make that horrific night a distant memory.
