Boys volleyball season is in full swing, and Lincoln
is ready for another run at the Academic Athletic
Association championship.
Led by head coach Flo Morodomi, the Mustangs have a
talented but young team, comprised of many players
with two or less years of experience.
“It’s one of the youngest teams I’ve ever coached,”
Morodomi said.
Morodomi added that their youth is an advantage if
they are able to learn quickly, and if the veterans
have the patience to teach the less experienced
players.
One of those veterans is captain Nelson Siu, who is
in his fourth year on the team and provides leadership
during games and practices.
“He is very important in where the team goes,”
Morodomi said.
Despite their overall lack of experience, five of the
team’s six starters are returning seniors, compared to
last year’s team which had only three returning
seniors. The leadership of those seniors and their
ability to pull together and support each other will
be one of the deciding factors in the success of this
team. Morodomi thinks it will be one of their
strengths, and senior Henry Wong agrees.
“There’s a lot of leadership this year,” Wong said.
As usual, you can expect Lowell to be the Mustangs
main competition for the AAA title. Morodomi also
expects Galileo to be a surprising team.
Lincoln faced a tough preseason schedule, losing to Sacred Heart and defeating Redwood, both teams with more volleyball experience. Since volleyball is less popular than sports like football,
basketball, or baseball, most players in the AAA
haven’t grown up playing the game. League opponents
are generally less seasoned than private schools
or club teams, so Lincoln is taking the high level of competition as a
chance to get better and prepare for the league
season. It looks like that preparation is paying off, as the Mustangs opened their league season with a victory over O’Connell.s
Morodomi’s goals for this year’s team are to learn
the game, have fun, and of course, “bring that trophy
back.” Wong says they expect to improve as volleyball
players and give 100 percent every time they step on
the court.
Wong added, “We’ve been looking forward to this
season, it will be a great season. Come out and watch
us play.”
