Lincoln boys’ tennis team recently had their own tournament called the “Mustang Classic”. This tournament was made up many years ago by the coach, Greg Simmons. “Mustang Classic” is played at Golden Gate Park for certain reasons. It was held on February 25-26.

Because the courts at Lincoln are not as good as the courts at Golden Gate Park, the team can’t go to all the tournaments.

“We don’t play any matches at Lincoln because the courts are so crummy, it’s not safe. Our regular season matches were taken away because our courts aren’t safe,” coach Greg Simmons.

“This tournament is held by Lincoln where a bunch of schools from the Bay Area compete against each other. It is a good opportunity to practice for the season and to raise money. We went into the conciliation and came in 6th for guys and 7th for girls,” senior manager Tiffany Lew.

“I think this is a great way for us to get warmed up for the season. I ended up playing doubles, I lost one and one won. Hopefully we will win games for this year,” freshmen Garrick Lee.

Last season was not the greatest season. They ended up finishing behind Washington and Lowell, coming in 3rd place. To make it worse, some of the best players didn’t have the grades to go out and play.

“We have a good team though, we’ll do fine,” Simmons said.

This year the key players who will help us win the All City Finals are: seniors- Boris Gites and Jon Siao, juniors- Brian Estill and Elliot Leon, and freshmen- Aaron Wu, Garrick Lee, and Joshua Chan.

“All coach’s expectation is to win All City, but in our situation Lowell is standing in the way. I would like to beat Lowell and make it to the championship. I expect to beat them. I’m setting up a really touch preseason to pump them up a bit,” Simmons said.

Most players have the same hopes for this new season.

“We want to win All City as a team. We’re hoping to win All City doubles. We want to make it through the season without injuries,” senior Jon Siao.

If you’re hoping to join tennis next year, better start practicing to keep up with the talented players this year.

“Don’t wait until you’re seniors to come out and play tennis, start when you’re a freshmen or take lesson when you’re a younger kid. Come and play,” Simmons said.
