“Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.”

The hunter, camouflaged, tranquilizer gun in hand is venturing into the very depths of the jungle. He is on edge, waiting for the wild beasts to swarm and attack their pray. They will shred him to pieces with the idea of freedom of speech. This hunter is none other than Principal Marley Morris and those beasts are the students of Crosby High School if they lacked some sort of dress code.
According to students, rules at the school have been known to be notoriously strict, almost to the point of simply being senseless. Any discrepancy rule makers might find a distraction within the students’ attire can immediately be sent to the storage room to find a more appropriate and mildew-smelling replacement.
“The school is really hypocritical. They say we don’t have a dress code, that we don’t have uniforms, but they tell us what we can and can’t wear.” said sophomore, Jonathan Steward.
Students and teacher alike have expressed that some restrictions on items of appearance such as purple hair and t-shirts that display cusswords are only made a distraction by rule makers because of their own prejudices, while they remain uncared about by fellow peers.
But if students were to seriously look at the idea of complete freedom, they would find that it is unrealistic. All fields of work require a dress code ranging from lawyers who must wear a suit to fast-food distributors who must wear their polos and khakis.
Certain boundaries set down in the school dress code are reasonable. Females should not be allowed to wear tops that have necklines so low that they’re falling out of it and males should not be allowed to wear pants that are worn so low on the butt they must be held them up to walk.
If students were truly allowed to wear whatever wherever just imagine the infinite possible combinations. A girl with lime green hair wearing a miniskirt so short its considered part of her shirt and a boy with obscenities tattooed on his forehead wearing studs and a shirt cut open to expose his naval.
“No dress code would give students the opportunity to express themselves, but sometimes things can be taken a little too far.” said freshman, Kimberly Butkiewicz.
There is no need for students to have to put out a nationwide inquiry if their outfit will fit the discretion of the administrators and the teachers that particular day. There is no need to avoid certain people so that there won’t be referral to the mildew kingdom, but there still needs be some boundaries so as not to create rampant chaos.
