Jasmine Myers

Senior Jasmine Myers has been recognized as the girls’ athlete of the month for her dedication and skill in academics and the sports she loves.

Myers loves playing tennis but of all her activities, softball is her second heart.

“It’s only natural for me now,” Myers said.

She has been playing softball since the age of four and has been varsity all of her high school years, and anticipates a varsity captain spot this spring.

When younger, she played in little leagues only as she grew older she moved up to club softball with the Waukesha Fire Burgs and Tosa Eagles.

When she arrived at Rufus King High School, she did not actually like tennis, but once convinced to participate by a friend, it became her second sport.

“She’s an incredible athlete,” head coach Duke O’Keefe-Boettcher said.

O’Keefe-Boettcher said that Myers was one of the main reasons why the team won conference for the last three years.

“She’s a good person to have around,” junior Gabrielle Charles said.

Myers also helps the underclassmen feel welcome, guiding them to become stellar players. She’s one of the people who made varsity softball what it is, Charles said.

Winning conference every year for softball makes it all more worthwhile for Myers. Her junior year, Myers became number three singles player in the city, and senior year she was named the number one singles player.

Her letters include two All-Conference stars for tennis, the MVP award in softball her junior year and a captain star for tennis.

Myers set another milestone being the first softball player at Rufus King to be named “Player of the Week” in the Journal Sentinel her freshman year.

School has always been a priority for Myers, being Full IB and excelling in sports has pushed her beyond her peers.

Myers has applied to UW-Whitewater and UW-Madison. With no surprise both schools have accepted her. She plans to try out for softball in college hoping in the future.

She gives her softball and tennis teams inspirational words;

“Work hard and be dedicated because your team takes this seriously and counts on you.”

Christopher Stovall

Sophomore Christopher Stovall has everything going for him and being honored as male athlete of the month makes him want to accomplish more in sports and academics while he carries an average of 13 points per game and a GPA of 3.2.

During the football season, Stovall played as a JV wide receiver. He  helped his team achieve numerous victories. Basketball season has commenced, and he plays small forward on the JV squad.

Defense and passing are his strengths, but his leadership and work ethic are even stronger than that. These strengths, displayed on the court and in his everyday activities, guide him.

Stovall and his teammates connect through his weakness, shooting. He aims to improve his shooting skills and make his team better. According to sophomore and JV guard Kevin Words, it does not seem as if it will take much effort.

“Stovall is getting better by the day, and when he improves or any player improves, the team improves,” Words said.

Basketball is a huge part of his future.

“I plan on going to the University of Kentucky and going to the NBA,” Stovall said.

Kobe Bryant and John Wall, Stovall’s favorite basketball players, influence his dream of going pro.

“John Wall is exciting and young and just plays with so much confidence. Kobe is so passionate and knows the game well,” Stovall said.

His mother, Aretha Franklin, has an even greater influence on him, pushing him to do his best and be on top of his game and education by any means necessary.

“She shows me how working hard can get you far even if it takes not going to sleep,” Stovall said.

Stovall has good church attendance and earned one of the top in the Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest outside of school. He is also involved in the Boy’s and Girls Club, Upward Bound program and College Readiness 21.

Stovall is on his way to success. He has learned what steps will help him reach his goals, and he insists on teaching that lesson to those who want to do something with their lives.
