Students
shouldn’t forget about Corey Cathey, 17, senior captain of the varsity soccer
team. Cathey has held a varsity captain position since junior year and guides
the team.
Cathey started playing organized
soccer his freshmen year, but his soccer career began much earlier.
“My
first grade teacher found me to be really athletic, and she thought I’d excel
on the soccer field, so I began to play,” he said.
Alioto
feels Cathey’s ability to relate to the team, on and off the field, is one
reason why he has been captain for two years.
“It
has been a pleasure to coach Corey for four years; he’s very unique and he
possesses many abilities in soccer,” Alioto said.
Cathey
considers soccer one of the most dangerous sports, but he continues to work at
it. His abilities include being a team player and leader.
“Corey
is a tremendous athlete and a role model, at his age, for other players,”
soccer coach Mike Alioto said.
Cathey not only leads on the field,
but in Link Crew. He has been a Link Crew Leader since his junior year. Craig
Machut, Link Crew adviser, feels Cathey is back his senior year because he did
such a great job.
“Corey
is very engaging and exciting. He’s a role model for the freshmen,” he said.
Machut also believes that Cathey is
dependable and passionate about Link Crew. Cathey joined Link Crew because he
feels it is helpful and better prepares students for high school.
“I
wish we had Link Crew as freshmen,” Cathey said.
Cathey
is very committed to both activities, but he does not plan to make a career out
of soccer.
“I’m
not going to college for soccer unless I receive a scholarship to play.
Otherwise, I’d like to be an elementary school teacher or principal,” he said.
Cathey
has other interests. He likes to play all sports, particularly basketball,
watch football and spend time with friends and family.
He
does not only excel in sports, he is also academically strong.
“Corey
is a great student. He’s reliable, trust worthy and intelligent,” Machut said.
With
a 3.4 GPA Cathey worries little about college. Both Machut and Alioto agree
that Cathey will be successful in college and in life.
