Senior Katie Conrad joined the girls varsity soccer team her freshman year and has been the captain for the last two years.
Conrad maintains a 3.8 average and is a full diploma student.
Varsity girls soccer coach Michael Alioto called Conrad a physical, smart player who leads by example with her quality work ethic. Alioto said these traits carry over to games, where her defensive skills helped win three City Conference titles.
Conrad said she enjoys being captain of varsity soccer and called it a challenge because the coach demands a lot from the team. Conrad’s favorite part of soccer is that it is a team sport but also includes plenty of individual commitment.
As a central defender, Conrad is a big part of the starting offensive attack from the back, according to Alioto. He also describes her as never satisfied with her playing abilities and always looking to improve her skills in the sport.
Sophomore varsity soccer player Liviya David said Conrad is a good captain who knows when to get serious but is also very friendly, creating a good atmosphere on the team.
“We have a solid team that’s been playing together for a while now. We have a good team chemistry and I think that’s our best asset,” Conrad said.
Conrad juggles her busy schedule by only spending time with friends on weekends and taking care of all schoolwork during the weekdays.
Senior varsity soccer player and Conrad’s best friend Eleanor Ryan said the team respects her very much.
“She holds a power on the team, but it’s not like an arrogant power; they really respect her,” Ryan said.
Ryan said the team respects Conrad because she keeps calm while she plays and never loses her cool.
Conrad plans to go to UW-Madison for college, hoping to go into urban planning as a career.
