On Friday October 8th, Escambia High School hosted its annual Hall of Fame night, which honors Escambia High alumni who have succeeded in sports after high school. The stadium was full of excited students, parents, faculty, and alumni.
This was a very special event for many and became even more meaningful as the night unfolded.
Ms. Kirkland was in charge of the arrangements and handling the awards. Those who were honored include Emmit Smith, Jimmy Presley, and Coach Dwight Thomas. Another inductee was Coach Mary Bailey, who passed away unexpectedly last year.
The dinner ceremony before the game took place in the gym. Many teachers brought in food and appetizers voluntarily, which really helped a great deal.
“It was more hectic than normal,” said Ms. Peters, who was in charge of providing food and preparing the scenario. “The whole program went well and there was food left over!”
For Coach Mayo, it was tough to coordinate the schedules of people like Emmit Smith and Jimmy Presley to fit into the night’s schedule, however, the night proved to be a success.
“There was a lot of hard work and long hours, but it was worth the work.” he said.
He also stated that “It was a tremendous success as it brought positive attention to EHS, our community, and to Pensacola. It further acknowledges the great athletic traditions of EHS.”
