MAKING THE GRADE: A student athlete receives an F, which could prevent him from participating in his sport. - Dani Galipeau

The “no pass, no play” rule started years ago and the philosophy behind it is that no student should be playing a sport that is failing a class. Additionally, the idea is that when students play sports they should know what their priorities are.

“It [no pass, no play] forces students to put academics first,” Brian Raper, assistant wrestling coach, said.

For the most part this policy is successful with some exception, if a student is falling behind there could possibly be deception said Eddie Lopez. Due to this misleading, the rules have changed a bit. Coaches used to take the students word that they were up to speed in all their classes. But now they need teachers consent and the coach’s approval.

“I think they [students] dislike it when they’re failing,” Eddie Lopez, assistant principal of operations and resources said.

Some students have no problem working out the difficulties between class work and practice. Though this guideline is more than fair, most athletes don’t want to be caught sitting on the bench rather than in the game.

Senior Josafhat Rodriguez who runs for cross country and track feels it’s important to stay up on classes and if you get behind you should come after or before school.

If students keep their grades reasonable and passing, they should be able to play any sport of their choice. Keeping their grades up doesn’t just allow them to play sports in high school, it provides them with a wider range of options for their future.
