HOMEWORK NOT A PRIORITY: Some students get deterred by their favorite video games. - Sue Rivera

Most people have played video games at least once in their life, but some of those people have become addicted.

Some students play for hours at a time.  Some students can control it and have a set amount of time that they play each day and some don’t play at all.  Video games come in a variety of styles, anywhere from violence, family or educational and with several different game systems the choices are endless.

Students playing video games could possibly be using them to get away from their everyday life.  Recent studies from Wheeling Jesuit University have shown that video games can actually be therapeutic and can distract a child from chronic pain, personal problems or just help them relax.  It can be considered to be a great adjunct to pain control in children.

Freshman Aiden Cauzeviek, uses video games to help relax him before beginning his homework. “I play video games about 5-6 hours a day and spend 5-30 minutes studying or doing schoolwork,” he said.

Others believe that video games can be productive if their time is spent wisely.

For Freshman Wyatt Haynes schoolwork is priority.

“When I get home, schoolwork comes first and videogames later.  I believe that videogames can also help you learn how to be more imaginative and creative as long as you don’t become obsessed,” Haynes said.

Some people, on the other hand, only play on rare occasions or never.

“I play video games a few times a year and spend time with school clubs or being involved in music.  I turn in my schoolwork on time and think that videogames can be a waste of time,” Sophomore Ana Manzano explained.

Whether videogames can be distracting to you or not is all about what you enjoy, dislike, or how you spend your time.
